Disney World will look different for those who haven’t been to Disney World in recent years. While many things at Disney World stay the same year after year, some are closed permanently to make way for new. Below are 10 experiences no longer found at Disney World, recently closed.
1. Great Movie Ride (1989-2017)
The Great Movie Ride was located in the Chinese Theatre at Hollywood Studios. The slow boat ride took guests through 12 scenes from classic movies including Wizard of Oz. Now closed, to make way for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
2. Main Street Electrical Parade (1977 – 1991, 1999 – 2001, 2010 – 2016)
Main Street Electrical Parade was a nighttime parade, beloved by many with its dazzling display of lights on Disney themed floats.
3. Ellen’s Energy Adventure, Disney World’s Epcot (1996—2017)
The second version of the show, with the original beginning in 1982. This version featured Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Nye as hosts on this lengthy, slow and dark attraction.
4. Muppets Courtyard (Closed 2016)
Muppets Courtyard has been re-imagined to become Grand Avenue with vintage buildings and warehouses. This area now draws inspiration from downtown Los Angeles of today.
5. Flights of Wonder (1998-2017)
Flights of Wonder started at Disney’s Animal Kingdom when the park itself opened. This educational show displayed various exotic birds. It has been replaced by Up! A Great Bird Adventure.
6. La Nouba by Cirque Du Soleil (1998-2017)
After nearly 20 years at Disney Springs, “La Nouba” by Cirque Du Soleil had its final performance on December 31, 2017. However the show will still go on, sometime in the future, Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts are working on a new collaboration to be inspired by the animation of Disney and created by Cirque du Soleil.
7. Circle of Life (1995-2018)
Circle of Life was a 20-minute film featuring Pumba and Timon from Disney’s The Lion King in the Land Pavilion. It told a story of people’s relationship to the land and environment.
8. DisneyQuest (1998-2016)
DisneyQuest was a large indoor space with interactive video games and more. It closed in 2017, to make way for the NBA Experience.
9. Maelstrom (1988-2014)
Maelstrom took guests on a journey in a log flume at the Norway Pavilion. Now guests will find Frozen Ever After in the Norway Pavilion, based on Disney’s Frozen.
10. Wishes (2003-2017)
A new nighttime spectacular premiered at Magic Kingdom in 2017 named Happily Ever After, this Fireworks Show replaced Wishes.
