I’m sure you have heard on the news about the winter storm that has hit the south. I just got a call from the school that they are closed AGAIN tomorrow. And I wanted to show you pictures of what shuts the south down……
I was so excited for the snow….. but it ended up being ice, snow mixed with ice and more ice. It’s terrible.
This is my neighbor’s car.
This is my van. I haven’t driven it since the snow and it hasn’t hardly melted at all!
I wish we were at Disney World this week instead…..
I am in nw alabama. We got 13″ here. I am 25 and have never seen this much snow. we arent prepared for snow like the north. we don’t have plows. it snowed here sunday/monday and theres still ice on most of our streets.
49 out of 50 states have snow. FLORIDA is snowless!! Even Hawaii has snow in the mountains. I love Florida. :)
I am in SC and we got 8in. of snow and about an inch of ice. Everything was shut down for 2 days, and then half reopened on Wed. Schools have been closed for a week now! LOL Gotta love the south! :)
I lived in Columbia, SC for 6 years and was amazed how just the prediction of snow would everything down for days, it didn’t even snow, just the prediction.
Couple things I learned about ice and snow, some obvious, some not. Drive slow, don’t apply your brakes if you think you might slide. Don’t gun your car once the light turns green-a car may be afraid they may slide if they hit the brakes and go through what was a yellow light on their side. Try to time your driving so you don’t stop at redlights, give the other driver plenty of room. “Black Ice”-horrible. Don’t drive with snow on your hood/top of your car, it has an amazing way of kicking up on your windshield and blowing onto other drivers cars, blinding them. Defrost, defrost, defrost.
If you walk on ice/snow mixtures, use sneakers-the rubber soles are better to walk in, not the nice boots that don’t have them, ditto for any heels. If you have a choice in walking in snow or ice, you won’t slide on snow and fall.
Last year, the Directv receiver on the side of our house iced up. We didn’t what was wrong until we saw it. We called Directv to find out what we could do, if we could get a credit for not being able to watch programming. Initlal response was sorry, it’s the weather, wait til it melts. Ohio, January, it may not melt until April, not a good answer. Then while we were talking I aksed if we could try DeIcer( a spray that is used to get ice off windshields quickly). The guy was from Alabama and had no idea what we were talking about. Well it worked. I was inside while my husband sprayed it and all I heard was a giant thud and thought the reciever came off the house, but it was the ice all at once. The guy said he would have to remember that product.
Oh my goodness, I’m right outside of Nashville and we haven’t had school all week! I’m climbing the walls!!!!!
I just got back from running an errand and the rural roads are still pretty bad. There was ice in the center of each lane and down the middle and people were driving way too fast! It’s starting to melt some, but I can see why the schools decided to cancel it.
There is one neighborhood that is straight up a hill. Their road is barricaded closed and they aren’t allowed to even attempt to leave. That’s scary.
Our roads are dry b/c they are so black (I think). You should of seen the 3 inches of ice that was on the roof of the van that we had to stop and get off the roof. It was nasty!
My Cousin was stuck at B’ham Children’s hospital…he’s been there for about a week now…just pray for him and also his parents for having to be there, to begin with (because of the ice) they didn’t have deliveries to the cafeteria so they were stuck just eating snacks…i think they were able to get a delivery truck in tho now…also pray that they find out what is wrong with him, he is 7 mths old and has fluid surrounding his brain (between the lining and skull) they have done numerous testing and cannot find out why this is happening. They have sent off bloodwork to the mayo clinic to hopefully figure out what is wrong.
I’ve lived in East Tennessee for almost 6 years now (from Virginia before). In these 6 years, we’ve never had as much snow as we’ve had this year. Having said that, I’ve driven to work every day in it – only to be the only one in my department to show up to work. In Virginia, we handled the snow by putting down salt and scraping the roads. Here in Tennessee they have NO CLUE how to handle the snow. And I would personally prefer that most people try to stay home because they don’t know how to drive in the snow. Some people think that their 4WD car gives them magical powers to fly over the snow. You just have to learn how to drive in it.
It’s 5 above here in Minnesota :) January is not my favorite month.
I see some of you wishing you were at Disney now, to escape the winter weather. Sorry to be the bearer or bad news, but the only thing missing here is the snow and ice. This morning it was 28 when I sent my kids off to school. It will likely get a little warmer later in the day but nowhere near true warmth.
I live in one of the suburbs near Disney, About 20 minutes from the Animal Kingdom using the “back” entrance.
Oh no! You just ruined our fantasy. :( Haha!
It is pretty funny how things are different in different areas. Here (in South Dakota) we wouldn’t even really call that snow…more like a dusting. Wish I could show you the piles of snow around my town today, and all the bundled up kids walking to school. (I walked to school when I was a kid, too…7 miles a day, uphill both ways. ;)
I guess we got about 7 inches here where I am….but its been in the lower teens (night) and mid 20’s during the day, so it hasn’t went down alot…i’m just staying warm by the fire and trying not to get too stressed out about being cooped up in the house with two wild indians! LOL!
In ND, our school don’t shut down unless travel is very dangerous. My kids have to go outside until the temperature in lower than minus 15 degrees, but I’ve realized something…kids don’t notice how cold it really is (unlike all us “older” folks who are frozen solid some nights!) They are also really thankful for the 51.4 inches of snow we’ve gotten. Makes for some really nice, “warm” tunnels!! ;)
hehehe. Minnesota got nailed in December. Record setting month for snow. I too get a kick out of watching the South freak out at 2 inches. But I get nervous following a vehicle up here in Minnesota with a southern license plate ;o)
We’re in NE Alabama and still can’t see the ground….back roads are impassable, and schools are still shut down….ugh…..i like it for a couple days but this is getting old! LOL
I live in the Buffalo, NY area. We average about 100 inches of snow per season. My kids had exactly one (!!!) snow day last year and this year there haven’t been any closings yet. As others have mentioned, we are better equipped. We have snow plows and salters that help keep the roads clear, but often times the driving can still be a challenge.
I enjoyed this post. SO funny to see what shuts down the south. I do understand how even a little snow and ice could mess up a community if you are not prepared. Thanks for sharing.
Those pics make me giggle! In my part of OH we have maybe 5 inches of snow at the most, we were hoping for more and it didn’t happen! A good friend of mine just moved to ATL to get out of our bad weather here and it followed her! :)
That’s too funny! :)
That is what our neighborhood looks like NOW after all the roads have been plowed and driven on for a few days. Our kids missed one day of school and the roads weren’t that bad. Parents were fussing that school was called off.
It is amusing to those of us who regularly get snow to see how others deal with it. And I work for the city and in 10 years they have NEVER shut us down to where I didn’t have to go to work. We had a wind storm in 2008 and an ice storm in 2009 where we didn’t have power for 7 and 9 days and I still had to go to work. LOL. My daughter was born the day after we got our power back after that 9 days. (6 weeks early) One thing I will tell you is couponing/stockpiling makes it a lot easier to deal with these emergencies. Before I started doing it we would be stuck in the house with hardly anything to eat.
That makes me smile- stay warm and enjoy your time off. Here is CO I was hoping for a snow day earlier this week we got 7 inches total on the ground and the temp. was around zero at 8am but no luck with school closing just 4 long days of indoor recess.
I live in Indianapolis and we got 5 inches on Tuesday morning/afternoon. Schools didn’t close and by rush hour the main roads were completely clear. hahaha You guys barely even got a dusting!!
I am in East Tennessee. We have been out of school for three days and tomorrow we are going one hour late! I love the snow and snow days but I am really ready to get back to work! I am also headed to WDW for a quick girls weekend so I am watching the airport closely just to make sure that we can get out of here on time on Friday!!! No more snow for a couple of days!!
I lived in Birmingham when I was little, and I only remember getting snow a few times – but we (the kids) LOVED it! LOL, you know Mom bundles us all up really good, then we run outside and play for 10 minutes and return inside because we’re cold/wet/hungary/have to pee etc and we start the cycle over again.
Yes, Candice We are laughing at you. ;)
I get the freak out over the snow/ice, but in your picture the street is totally clear. So why they would cancel school is beyond me?
Ok this is uncalled for….It doesn’t bother me when people from up north laugh at what shuts us down because I was enaged to a man from Indiana and we went up every Thanksgiving and Christmas and I saw what real snow is, what he had dealt with his whole life. But he also saw what we dealth with when it snowed and iced over here. We don’t have plows or proper equipment like ya’ll do and the BIG differnce he saw is it is A LOT more hilly here where is is much more flat there. Just because Kristin’s street doesn’t look bad, the interstates were awful. Still today there are SOLID sheets of ice everywhere. There have been quite a few wreck and fatalies, so before you “make fun” know your facts and act like a decent person. Have a great day!
Susan- I see you are clearly freaked out over the snow. That is understandable, as you are not used to dealing with it.
As for “uncalled” for… I think you read a bit too much into my post. I was merely agreeing with an earlier post.
As for knowing the facts… I do. Thank you! I sincerely hope you have a much better day than the one you have begun.
I can feel your pain. A few years ago (12 1/2 exactly as I was pregnant with our youngest) we had a snow/ice storm here in NW Indiana. It started around 7 a.m. on a Monday and by 9 a.m. that day our electric went out. We ended up losing electric until Saturday of that week. It was early March and it was very cold. Our family of four lived in the basement of the house that week. I remember when the phone rang our oldest sons who were 9 and 10 at that time would tell people they probably didn’t want to talk to me because I was crying! Hahahaha. Be thankful you still have your tv, computer, etc! :-)
We’re in the panhandle of Florida where it almost never snows. It’s suuuuper cold, though. Way too cold for Florida. Since there’s no snow, we’re operating as normal. Just cold. Sooooo cold.
I wish that’s all we got!! Up here in Maine today it is snowing 3 inches a hour! We’re up to 2 ft and it’s sapose to snow until morning….oh I wish it was just a dusting!! Spring seems sooo far away!!!
My husband and I were in driving through Birmingham on our way home from Branson,MO News Years Weekend as your were driving to Disney as we were praying for safe travel for you with good weather we were also praying once more to see snow before returning to Florida guess God had other plans for us but so enjoyed every minute of your updates enjoy the forced mini vacation with your family God has other plans for you
This just made my day! We have at least 6 inches of snow that has been around since November (every time it starts to melt we just get more) and this morning it was 20 below WITHOUT the wind chill…but I still went to school this morning!!!
Wow, I have to laugh…what you pictured is a good morning here in Wisconsin…and something we deal with a few time a week. We have to have at least 12-14 inches of snow, high winds, negative wind chills, cold temps (so the salt won’t work on the roads) AND ice to even have hope for a snow day!! It is amazing how different weather is from state to state.
We got 18″ today of the wonderful white stuff! Dear husband is sleeping on the couch (its 8pm now) as he had to shovel three times today! Schools were closed, but they are open tomorrow.
That is so funny. Nothing ever shuts down here in Ohio unless we have about 14 inches of snow. LOL
It makes me soooo mad when people from the north make fun of us for shutting everything down. A) I don’t think the state of GA even owns a snow plow… we don’t get snow here!
B) the snow melts during the day & freezes over at night.. That white, fluffy, easy to move stuff is only here for a few hours…it then becomes ROCK HARD ICE that you can’t even break by stepping on. It’s not like people from up north can magically drive on ice either.
Up north has lots of ice, sometimes storms dedicated to ice that breaks branches that downs power lines. We drive on ice. You have to drive slower sometimes doubling your commute. Like anything else you learn to do it. I live in Kansas and the schools here are closed because of windchill at -15. Our cities are equipped with trucks that put salt on the ice to melt and make more drivable. These crews usually work thru the night before during and after storms. I don’t think anyone is meaning to laugh at you but just find humor in the differences.
Actually we do drive on ice, depending on how bad it is. The snow plows put down salt or sand, depending on the temperature. It is all about learning how to drive in poor conditions and having proper equipment, all weather or snow tires, etc. The foot of snow yesterday closed nothing in Western NY but made for an extra long commute. I lived in GA for a year before my son was born. It snowed one day but wasn’t sticking to the ground. I loved seeing how excited my kindergarten class was over a few snowflakes. They were adorable.
I am in Naorth Carolina and here we get ICE. Not much snow. Even 4 wheel drive does not go on ice. School is closed again tomorrow. There were 2 accidents last week on our icy roads that killed 2 children trying to get to school.
I live in WI and it needs to be INSANE to cancel school or anything for weather here. That is what a “snow storm” is labeled in the south, here that is labeled a “DUSTING” HA! Unbelievable…
It is funny how parts of the country deal with snow. Both my husband I grew up around snow, so its not really a big deal to us. But here, oh my word! The local military bases were shut down for Monday and Tuesday, back at full force today. Schools have been closed down since Monday, probably owing to the fact that some of the buses run on back country roads.
It was fun while it lasted.
i live in IN also, and we got over 6inches, with more coming the next couple of days (or at least that’s what they say, who knows if we will get it and if we do how much!)
we only closed (schools) because the plows couldn’t get all the roads cleared before school started. i think the plow went down our road about 9:30am.
The road looks clear! So funny how different it is in areas of the country. We currently have about 3 inches here in the St. Louis area, which did close most schools for one day due to the fact that it was snowing the whole night before & into the morning rush. I’m sure that further north 3 inches wouldn’t have closed anything.
That’s funny! That is barely anything. Love where it is even dry pavement!
WOW…I have to admit that makes me laugh too…that’s every day winter here, and not a big deal…but of course it’s more difficult to deal with when it’s not a typical occurrence, so I understand!
Yep, same thing here in SC. I just heard school is closed again tomorrow (we home school though). We got about 6 inches of snow and 1/4 inch of ice. It is staying so cold that it will not melt. I am SO READY for it to be gone!!
This makes me laugh. We live in Indiana and had 28-35 inches in some areas. And places are OPEN, including schools.
Sorry, but I cannot feel sympathetic for you. We got over a foot last night, it took me over an hour to get to work (normally a 20 minute drive) and just came home from work(made a stop at the grocery store afterwards) to see that the plow went down the street and left a snow bank over a foot and a half deep at the end of the driveway. I had to climb over it with groceries in hand to get to my house. (Car currently parked on street since there was no way it’d make in up the driveway.) I have the hubby outside shoveling. I feel bad… he shoveled at 11:30pm last night and then was out there at 6am shoveling and now is home from work to do it again.
I think these pics are hilarious. It’s so funny in the difference in a “storm” between regions. I am in the midwest and that weather would not even delay school here.
The snow is so deep in ND that we can’t even see out yard light anymore. Nothing new around here though. The worst part is, we’re in for a LOT more before any signs of spring!! The toughest part for us is that the high for this weekend is minus 3 with a low of minus 30 with a wind. YIKES…that’s cold even for us tough North Dakotan’s!!
out here in Utah that is an everyday thing my road gets so icy i slip and fall just going to get the mail and can’t make it up a tiny hill to take books back to the library, but since eveyone is so used to the snow it hardly ever shuts down school or anything else. :/ i wish they would sometimes it just gets so dangerous out there.
Chicagoland received 3 – 7 inches of snow yesterday depending on where you live. Nothing cancelled. And…every winter I wish I lived down south.
Depends on where you live in chicagoland. I live in IN and we got over a foot. I wished I lived down south a couple weeks ago when I was stuck in a snow drift for 3 hours and we got 33 inches of snow. I couldn’t get home from work for 3 days. Got within 10 miles of home only to find out the only highway home had been closed and they declared a state of emergancy.
We only got 4 inches last night here n IN. It just reminds me of a little sneeze;p. Ice isn’t nice anywhere u get it and is awful 2 drive on. B careful!
That is too funny. We have a foot and a half in Ohio- nothing is cancelled.
It’s funny how different things are in different areas. :)
my husband said the yankees are laughing at us
My husband did have a good laugh but that was after finishing up the driveway with his new snow blower.
We are just west of ATL and the vehicles w/o 4 wheel drive cannot get out of the driveway. It’s a sheet of ice. This is the most snow I’ve seen since ’93. Our small road is iced over. I wouldn’t want my children on a bus out there! As a teacher I am thrilled to have the extra time at home with my children and husband. We are truly enjoying each other, though our 4 wheeler hooked up to an old bed liner has helped w/ the cabin fever. I think to make it up our school system will add 15 mins to each school day, like last year b/c of the flood. Small price for this week of family, and we’re off Monday too!
But even with 4 wheel drive it won’t help if it is a sheet of ice, snow yeah but ice not so much, We got 33 inches in a span of about a day and a half right before Christmas. Drifts on our road where as high as the snowplows. It melted with the warmer weather that we had over new years but it is back again, right now I am looking at over a foot of snow that we got over the past day or so. Ahhh living in the Lake Michigan LAke effect snow belt..
I know that when you get snow in the south it is hard becuase there is not enough plows or salt to spread around. My FIL works for the transportation Dept. In Tennesssee and when it snows even a quarter inch he is out for days plowing and cleaning up. Makes him laugh to see all the guys freaking out about a little snow since he is from Chicago.
We got 2ft of snow today I’m up in Massachusetts.
I’m in CT and we got 2 ft today too. And my office only close for part of the day today! And we’ll definitely be open regular time tomorrow. So funny the difference in snow response from North to South!
hahaha! I live in MA too, so the pic makes me laugh :)
I live in MA too and I wish that is all we got… hahaha I also wish I was in Disney too. Not until Sept…
