All I want to do is see Black Widow, guys. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.
But in these unprecedented times, movie studios are having to make unprecedented decisions, like push back release dates multiple times, move content to streaming, and halt development on some projects. If you’re having a hard time keeping track of what you can see when, don’t worry. I’ve rounded up all the upcoming release dates Disney features through 2021, with a couple Marvel flicks that are primed for 2022. And since Disney now technically includes Fox, I’ll throw in those as well.
SOUL – November 20, 2020 (Pixar)
We were supposed to have gotten this Jamie Foxx/Tina Fey starring vehicle in June, 2019, but now we have something to look forward to for the Thanksgiving holidays! The story of a music teacher who journeys from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions, this is directed and written by the man who brought us Up and Inside Out, Pete Doctor.
RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON — March 12, 2021 (Disney Animation)
This animated film was announced to have a November 2020 release date when the concept work was featured at the 2019 D23 expo. One rumpus later, and Soul gets that spot, with Raya moving to the Spring and the titular character recast with Star Wars fave Kelly Marie Tran.
BLACK WIDOW — May 7, 2021 (Marvel)
Oh, Black Widow. I just want to see you get up to some spy shenanigans. Originally set to premiere May 1,2020, this was supposed to be the kickoff film of the MCU’s Phase 4. Then it got pushed to November 6th, 2020, in a spot originally belonging to the MCU’s The Eternals. But with low box office for Mulan in China and would-be-blockbuster Tenet underperforming worldwide, Disney has decided to once again move the Scarlet Johansson vehicle to May, 2021. That they keep postponing, rather than move the Natasha Romanoff centered movie to streaming, speaks to the company’s faith in the movie’s quality. I’ll wait for you forever, Nat!
CRUELLA — May 28, 2021 (Walt Disney Pictures)
I confess, in all the anticipation for the live action Mulan, I completely forgot we were getting a Cruella DeVil origin story. Starring Emma Stone as the fur loving Brit, this 101 Dalmatians prequel kicks off a big summer for Disney. Hope you have no plans except to see movies for three months.
LUCA — June 18, 2021 (Pixar)
Luca centers on a young boy living on the Italian Riviera, who shares adventures with his newfound best friend. But a dark secret about his true identity (he is a sea monster from another world) seeks to threaten that bond. Pixar’s last embrace of another culture brought us the lovely Coco, so expectations are high with this one.
SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS — July 9, 2021 (Marvel)
Another Marvel movie, another entry with three release dates: February 2021, May 2021, and now July 2021. The first MCU flick to feature an Asian led cast, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will re-introduce the popular villain from the comics, the Mandarin. Very excited for the 25th movie of the MCU to hit theaters! Also very excited for a better promo image…
JUNGLE CRUISE-July 30, 2021 (Walt Disney Pictures)
We’ve had to wait quite a while to see if the Rock will be bringing as many puns to the feature film as the Skippers do on the beloved Disney Parks attraction. Originally slated for July 24, 2020, we’ll get the Emily Blunt feature a full year later, July 2021. An adventurous way to end the summer of Disney movies!
ETERNALS — November 5, 2021 (Marvel)
Another MCU tentpole that has seen many release dates. The Eternals was originally set to premiere November 2020 (now Soul‘s spot), then shifted to February 2021, and now landing a full year after its original date, in that prime Thanksgiving spot. The ensemble cast The Eternals hopes to fill The Avengers sized hole in our hearts, as a group of heroes must band together to save the Earth from those who would harm it. Getting more and more excited about Phase Four.
We don’t know much past November 2021, but these MCU films have been given release dates.
- THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER-February 11, 2022
- DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS-March 25, 2022
- BLACK PANTHER 2-May 6th, 2022
- CAPTAIN MARVEL 2-July 8, 2022
And if you’re looking for Fox features, these films will also be hitting a screen near you within the next year.
- THE EMPTY MAN — October 23, 2020 (Fox)
- FREE GUY — December 11, 2020 (Fox)
- DEATH ON THE NILE — December 18, 2020 (Fox)
- EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE — January 22, 2021 (Fox)
- THE KING’S MAN — February 12, 2021 (Fox)
- BOB’S BURGERS — April 9, 2021 (Fox)
- RON’S GONE WRONG — April 23, 2021 (Fox)
- DEEP WATER — August 13, 2021 (Fox)
- THE BEATLES: GET BACK — August 27, 2021
- THE LAST DUEL — October 15, 2021 (Fox)
- WEST SIDE STORY — December 10, 2021 (Fox)
