My 11 yr. old side-by-side refrigerator is dying. I want bottom drawer freezer with a single door fridge. Do you and/or your fans have any advice on how to save on this purchase?

We also just purchased a bottom-freezer french door from Lowe’s (seems to be popular!). We waited until they had a sale (15% off all appliances over $379) – they have these sales most holidays (ours was over father’s day). Then we signed up for the Lowe’s Mover’s coupon http://www.lowes.com/cd_Coupon+Registration_253641591_ (we’ve lived in our house for 3 yrs, shhh don’t tell!) for an additional 10% off. We bought a Whirlpool that qualified for a Manufacturer’s Rebate of $200 when we bought two appliances – we got an inexpensive dishwasher as well. Overall we saved 25% with a rebate of $200 cash. You could also sign up for the Lowe’s card for another 5% off (do this instead of the interest free financing if you have the cash on hand). The savings on that wasn’t enough for us to want to go through with signing up – but it depends on how much it would save you, could be worth a shot!

Check with your electric company. Right now my electric company is offering rebates if you buy energy star appliances.

When you decide where you want to buy it, then buy discounted gift cards for that store to pay for the fridge at one of the following websites:
plasticjungle.com
abcgiftcards.com
monstergiftcard.com
We did this when we bought our 3 screen doors and ceiling fans at Lowes, and also did it when we bought our laptop from Sears! Good luck!

I have bought several items from Craigslist: washer, dryer, car, furniture, etc. I have never had any issues, but I make sure to ask questions and I only buy when I feel comfortable.
IKEA has an As-Is section. Sears has clearance events. Floor models from furniture stores. Scratch and dent stores.
There are also some buyer clubs around. If you happen to belong to one, they usually have good deals but you have to wait a while for your appliance to be delivered.

Craigslist!

You should look at the discounted section at Lowes or Home Depotm most of the time time there is only a small ding on the item that you can bearly see.

We just bought an 21+ cubic foot upright freezer from Lowe’s for less than 1/2 of the retail price. Here’s how it went down….
Orig. price: $679
Independence Day sale price: $599
Independence Day additional 10% discount price: $539
Additional 5% off anytime you use your Lowe’s credit card price: $509
(I know that’s a little better than 5%, but it’s what is on the receipt)
Additional $$ off for almost unnoticeable dent on the side price: $459
Additional $ down from the sell of our 14 yr old fridge and chest freezer on craigslist price: $284
AND Lowe’s gave us 18 months of no interest :)
Praising the Lord for a GREAT deal. Hoping you find one too!

Become FB friends with your Hometown Sears Store. Mine posted a floor model of the fridge we had been looking at for a huge discount. It was originally 2499 and we paid 1400 for it. It had the same warranty and everything!
Anna says
Ask to buy the floor model or ask if they have any returns- I do this at Sears, and usually get a good deal. Also, if you’re a card person– I’m not usually, but do have a sears card for things like this– there is usually an extra % off or $ off the front for using it
Erin says
We bought our fridge at Lowe’s using giftcards purchased on eBay and combining it with a 10% off coupon when the fridge was on sale. The free delivery and deal on giftcards made Lowes the place to go.

We just had to buy a new dryer last weekend and I just went to Lowe’s and negotiated with them. They did not have the one I wanted in stock so they gave me the next model up cheaper than the one I wanted. I would be careful with the scratch and dent because they often do not carry the same warranty. (We bought a fridge a few years ago that was a scratch and dent and the monitor that kept the fridge temp did not work. We were able to exchange it but had a hard time to get the store to do the exchange)
Also if you use upromise you can earn money back and also if you have a Lowe’s card you can get 5% back.
Micayla says
Agree w/ scratch and dent. Someone hit the side of ours with a fork lift. That side is against the wall anyway. :)
I’ve heard there is a Sears appliance outlet here in Indianapolis but I’ve not been there.

We are in the market for one ourselves and just found out that Sears will match prices! pretty awesome :)

Also get the sears rewards card, it’s not a credit card and with every purchase you get “cash” towards a future purchase, I just got $32 off my purchase last week!

Go for the sratch and dent! My parents saved a boat load because of a small ding on the side which they ended up covering up with a magnet!
Coupon Rachael says
I like the covering it up with a magnet idea!! Scratch and dent it is when we purchase our next appliances!
Andi says
Wait till a holiday weekend. If you can hold out get it Black Friday. Also if you get the credit card for whatever store you get it from they ususally offer no interest on the purchase from any where from 12-18 months. Best Buy might different, they may offer more time. I know for their TVs they offer 36 months no interest. Its like lay-a-way that you get to take home. Just a thought, good luck with your decision.

Shop at Lowe’s! My dad bought a fridge that was returned because it didnt fit in the peoples space that had originally bought it. It also had a tiny dent on the side that was going to be up against the wall so he got an amazingly good deal on it. Since those people bought it, took it home, it didnt fit, and brought it right back and in the process the store caused it to get the dent they highly discounted it for him! Plus he used a 10% off coupon he got from the post office in the change of address packets!

We found ours at Lowe’s. First, wait for a holiday–they’re more on sale then. Second, we price matched with local competitors (Home Depot, Sears, HHGregg). We price matched at Lowe’s because their policy is 10% of the price (the other stores are 10% of the price difference). Finally, we used a coupon! Lowe’s offers coupons for 10% off your total purchase (up to $500 off). By combining all three, we saved over half on our appliances!
Tara says
Scratch and dent! I found a $2200 fridge at Sear’s marked down to $1300 all because of a small dent that you can’t even see.
kale says
Scratch and dent from appliance stores. Also appliance smaller appliance stores take your old fridge or appliance when they install your new one.
Open box or show room specials in department stores. They can’t sell these at full price they’ve been opened.
Also try your local habitat for humanity , contractors bring a lot of things there that are new or almost.
Craigslist. You would be surprised what people sell.

My parents were able to save on several large purchases- fridge, ride on lawn mower, etc. by finding one on the clearance/ return isle of lowes and home depot. They had been returned, dented, etc. They got their fridge heavily discounted. I was able to find one I was happy with on craiglist.
