We always fly Southwest, and try to book when they have a sale. Swagbucks’ Southwest Airlines gift cards help reduce the price, too. :)

We have a Continental (or United now I guess) credit card that we use to pay for everything (yes, we pay it off every month!) and that gives us frequent flier miles and we use those to buy our airfare. I know that a lot of y’all do the envelope system, but for us the credit card works. and since we actually USE our miles, the annual fee isn’t a waste.
Other than using our miles, we try to keep airfare down by checking for cheaper prices within a few days of when we want to travel and seeing if nonstop or with stops is cheaper.

Wow! So many Shannons leaving comments! LOL!
I research the heck out of the internet to find the cheapest price. I check all of the airline websites first and then check sites like Travelocity, Priceline (not the name your own price section). We then use the Cashback Bonus from our Discover card to pay toward the price.

I have read that Wednesday’s at 3pm are a good time to check flight prices. I have no idea why, though. I check Southwest daily; sometimes a few times a day and it’s amazing how the prices fluxuate from day-to-day and depending on what time you search.

Airfarewatchdog.com can be used to set up e-mail alerts when your city pair and fare meets certain criteria. However, if you have Southwest in your area… stalk their website and hope for a Wanna Get Away fare. Because they truly are the “no hassles and no nickle and dime you to death” airline.

I signed up for the Southwest Credit Card. It cost $99 a year but we got 50,000 points (over $800 of flights). We pay it off each month and will cancel before the $99 becomes due again. So in my mind we got $800 of flights for $99!

I love Southwest too but another great airline to try is Allegiant! When we went to Disney we were able to fly less than $150 each roundtrip! It may be a little more now because that’s been 2 1/2 years but it’s worth looking into it. We had to drive a little further to get to an airport where Allegiant flew on the days we needed but it was SO worth it!!!

We fly southwest which always have great prices! I also have a southwest card to rack up points to use for flights.

I use Yapta, it’s a wonderful website. I set it up to have them email me when the ticket price has dropped to my preferred level.
I also have joined the frequent flier programs with my favorite airlines and I open every email, you just never know.
I also check the three closest airports to me, driving an extra hour may just save you hundreds.

I fly Southwest. The free bags represent a huge savings. I travel mid-week, more savings. Once you book your flight, check back VERY OFTEN. If the fares drop, you can get a voucher for the difference. Keep doing this.

I have a roundtrip ticket, NY to Orlando end of Nov. returning beg. of Dec. non=stop, for $224 round trip

I saw on a talk show recently that the best time to buy airfair tickets is Wednesday at MIDNIGHT until around 2 a.m. OVER THE PHONE, not online. I don’t remember the explanation, though.
Renee Patry says
we use smaller charter airports and fly with smaller airlines believe it or not it is way less money in fact i just got 4 roundtrip tickets leaving a few days before Christmas and coming back a few days before New Years and it costs me just about the same price as any other airlines price for ONE ticket- but I got 4!!! Im not flying in the middle of the night or on stand by, and I will get there in less than 3 hrs VS southwest or delta that takes over 5 hrs to get there!
Luci says
How do you arrange the flights? Do you do this online or by phone? Are you going through a third party or directly with the airline?
Chrystal says
I find that Southwest always has the best deals AND no charge for luggage like others!
Colleen Fowler says
I know this is not for everybody, but if you happen to be military and call Southwest, you can sometimes get a fare for as low as $51 to just under $200 regardless of where you are going within the US. I found this by accident while talking with a southwest phone rep.
Colleen says
I have a Southwest Airlines card, I use it for everything I can use a credit card for (I even call in my electric bill payment once a month, because they only take credit cards over the phone) and I pay it off every month. It costs me $50 a year (annual fee), but this year it saved us $700 on our flights to Florida for my cousin’s wedding cruise!
Shannon says
I try to check the less expensive sites like Airtran and Southwest for a couple of weeks when I know what our dates are to get an idea of prices. That way, I know when a good deal comes along. Also if you know for sure which airline you will be flying, you can always purchase gift cards ahead of time. Our grocery store has Southwest gift cards and they also give you 10 cents off gas for every $50 purchased – gift cards included!

We drive!
