One of the really cool things about EPCOT and specifically about the World Showcase is that it’s staffed with cast members that work in the country of their origin- so go into Der Teddybar and you’ll speak with actual German citizens. The same can be said of all the stores in each pavilion, as well as the restaurants, performers, etc.
However, since “the Rumpus”, as Kristen B. likes to call it, these cultural representatives have been sent back home.
Now that reopening is looming, what does that mean for these beautiful, immersive World Showcase countries?
Disney and the cast member union have reached an agreement that will allow the World Showcase to reopen with cast members that do not meet the “culturally authentic theming.”
“The Parties recognize and agree for the purposes of a reopening and until such time that the Company is able to resume normal staffing, employees who do not meet the culturally authentic theming at EPCOT may be temporarily assigned to work in positions that are otherwise reserved for Cultural Representatives.”
I think of this as one of those magical Disney touches that slide seamlessly into your consciousness and will possibly be startling when removed- however, we can certainly understand just why it is not practical or safe to try to recall the cultural representatives at this time! We look forward to their return, when it is safe for all involved.

This is understandable but sad. Seeing and talking with cast members who actually live in the countries is one of my favorite things about Epcot
