A couple weeks ago my good friend Kristin shared with us what to do if you get sick at Disney World. I was really interested in her article and read it with a bit of a smile on my face as I was sitting aboard the Disney Magic Cruise Ship at that moment sick myself. I was already planning to write about my experience of being sick on a cruise ship and it just seemed to be a great sign that Kristin and I were on the same page. That may have to do with how many people are getting sick lately too I suppose. It has been nasty hasn’t it?
I had the unfortunate experience of being sick on my last cruise. I spent the entire 4 night Bahamian Cruise in my stateroom. I will admit that sitting in my stateroom being sick wasn’t great, but it sure beat sitting at home sick. I at least could sit out on my verandah and enjoy the warm sun. After a couple days of sleeping and watching The Avengers over and over, I finally decided to head to the Medical Center.
It took me a couple days until I decided visiting the Medical Center was the right move for me. I had been sick for a while and just wanted to better. First bit of information you should know is that the Medical Center is not free. It cost me $140 just to be seen and this charge is added to your stateroom account. They won’t bill you insurance for you. FYI: They will give you all the right documentation to submit for reimbursement from your insurance company though. Beyond the office visit charge, you will be charged for medications, tests, and more.
Although, you do have to pay out of pocket to be seen and for any tests or treatment you receive, I am still really glad I visited. They took amazing care of me. The Doctor took the time to get to know me, my medical history and to really understand my individual needs. They made sure to diagnose me correctly and to attack the Pneumonia I had developed with the strongest antibiotics available. My Doctor even explained to me that on land he wouldn’t have given me such strong medicine for this but he wanted to get me better as quickly as possible so I didn’t lose anymore of my vacation than necessary.
With all that said, don’t do what I did and wait. If you’re feeling sick, get to the Doctors and get treated. We all spend far too much money on our vacations to be sitting in a stateroom the whole time.
