One great way to lower your meat budget is to purchase clearance meat. This is meat that is getting close to it’s sale by date but has not passed that date yet. Most grocery stores have a mark down schedule, so be sure to ask the butcher when they mark down their meat. If you can time your grocery shopping trip with the clearance schedule, you can save a good bit of money.
Also be sure to ask if your grocery store marks down dairy, produce, etc.

Thanks, awesome tip. Do you happen to know when Birmingham Publix does this?

I have found the same is true for items in the dairy section. I have bought 4-packs of yogurt marked down by $2 and eggs marked $1 off!

I love my grocery store because it has some kind of meat on clearance every day! So I find something good almost every time I go in. ALSO, I finally figured out that the butcher guys are MORE than helpful if you ask them to double wrap the meat you purchase. That way if you don’t cook it right away, you can put it in the freezer and know that it is wrapped well to cut down on freezer burn. Put it on the bottom of your meat pile in the freezer and rotate the older meat to the top. Wish someone would have told me all this years ago when I was a single mom raising little kids by myself. It would have saved me quite a bit of money.
