Planning on making a special recipe that calls for a pricey spice or a rare spice you won’t use more than once? Instead of spending unnecessary money, find a substitute. It’s easy to do. Just search for the name of the spice + substitute in Google.
Example: Say your recipe calls for Chinese 5 Spice. Search for “Chinese Five Spice Substitute” in Google. A few substitutes include Allspice + Ginger or Ginger + Cloves + Cinnamon + Anise Seeds.
So while it won’t be exactly identical to the recipe list, it will be comparable and you won’t be out $3-$7 for a spice you’ll never use again.

I always check Trader Joe’s (if you have one) for spices first. Their prices are awesome for spices, however they don’t have a huge selection. Last week I bought Garlic Powder and Cumin for $1.99 and $1.49. Can’t beat it!
