Here are random tips and tricks I have to make sure I get the longest life out of my stockpile:
- Check expiration dates as I put them in the shopping cart. I always pick my items from the back of the items on the shelf.
- I never stockpile a new flavor of an item. What if I don’t like the flavor? Then I am stuck with 10 bottles of something my family won’t eat.
- I write the expiration date of the item on the front in marker.
- At the beginning of the month, I pull out all the items that expire that month and put them on a special shelf in the pantry to make sure they are used before they expire.
Do you have any tips on how to extend the life of your stockpile?

Man your ideas are great! This is one of our projects this weekend to go through everything/reorganize/see what we have so we know what is expiring when. I love the permanent marker idea! Thats smart I just throw the stuff in the cart and now I have ranch dressing expiring at christmas!
I don’t have a special shelf for my items expiring but I have the in order front to back by expiration date. It takes a little work, but the oldest is always in the front. I like the shelf idea too. May have to try that and see if its easier! :D
Your ideas are the best way to do it—–Always check expiration dates.
Whenever I buy canned food, I always make sure to put it in the back of what I already have.
When I buy frozen foods, I put them on the lowest shelf of the freezer and move the stuff I already have up a shelf. Then when I need to pull something out, I always pull from the top shelf.
Also, I like to mark the price that I paid on the front label.
