Grow Your Fund is a daily post that gives you a chance to win a gift card by checking in on all the various challenges you are participating in. You can choose to participate in one, two or even all of the challenges giving you even more opportunities to Grow Your Fund!
The Challenges
No Dining Out: The concept is simple, lower your family’s dining out bill and add the money you save to your fund.
Minniemizing for the Mouse: Get in shape for your trip to Disney by walking at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. The average person walks 8 or more miles a day at Disney World. Your feet will thank you!
Not going to Disney? Don’t worry. You can participate too. Just commit to working out at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week!
Budget Challenge: Can your family stay on budget this month for groceries, entertainment, dining, etc? Do you think you could even challenge yourself not to spend a dime 5 days this month? Be sure to report on your spending vs your budget every day. The goal is to be able to add the extra money saved at the end of the month to your fund!
*If you haven’t set a budget yet, you might want to check out this post.
Decluttering Challenge: Is your stuff starting to overtake your house? Do you feel like your kids room is full of too much junk and not enough fun? If so, I challenge you to find a new home for just 25 items a day for the next 30 days. This could be 25 articles of clothing, 25 books you no longer read, 25 toys your kids ignore. Have a box for items to donations, a box for items to sell and throw the rest away! At the end of the challenge, have a yard sale and add the earnings to your fund!
The prizes
At the end of each month, I will pick FOUR winners who will each receive $25 to add to their fund. Look for the winners to be announced on the 3rd of each month.
How to enter
Leave a comment with the title of the challenges it is for. You can participate in one, two, three or even all four challenges. There will be one winner per challenge, and winners can win multiple times! It’s all done by using Random.org, so if your number comes up and you are eligible, you win! In order to be eligible to win, you must actively participate in the challenge for at least FIVE calendar days.
My Updates
No Dining: Hubby went to Subway and spent $7.
Budget Challenge:
Decluttering:
Minniemizing: I am working on finding ways to relieve my stress besides eating. Got any suggestions?
No Dining
- Take a look at your current dining out budget. How much did you spend last month going out to eat? That is money that could have gone into your fund instead! Try cutting your out to eat costs this month and adding the difference to your fund.
- Set a weekly dining out budget, if you resist going out to eat, add that amount to your fund instead.
- If you were seriously about to go out to eat (like had your coat on and was going out the door or pulled into the drive thru and then pulled back out), add the amount you would have spent to your fund.
- Going out to eat and using a coupon or paying with a gift card? You could add that amount to your fund too. For example… if you had a $25 gift card to Cracker Barrel and you used it, you could take $25 cash out of your budget and add it to the fund. Or if you used a $10 coupon, you could take $10 cash out of the budget and add it to the fund.
- You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habits, you can participate!
- You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
- Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
- At the end of the month, you will need to comment on the very last post to be entered to win. I will choose the winner from that post and verify that you have commented on at least 5 days worth of posts. The comments must of occurred on 5 DIFFERENT days. Meaning if on the 30th, you commented on that post and then went back and commented on 4 days worth of posts, you would be disqualified. You must comment on 5 different posts on 5 different days.
Minniemizing for the Mouse
- I need to get fit for the mouse. My feet hurt so bad from all that walking and for once I’d love to experience Disney without being in pain. We are going in November, so I am hoping to make a big lifestyle change between now and then. I can’t do it alone and so I need the help from all of you!
- Check in each day and report on your progress. The goal is to exercise for at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. For those of us going to Disney, walking for those 20 minutes is a great way to not only get in shape, but prepare our feet.
- It really doesn’t matter what you do as long as you are moving!
Budget Challenge
- Everyone needs a budget. Budgets will help you to be in control of your money without your money being in control of you. You dictate where your money goes and how it is spent.
- Don’t have a budget? I’ve written a few articles that should help you set one… How to Set a Budget and How to Set a Grocery Budget. You’ll find even more helpful advice under Getting Started Couponing and Your Fund.
- Each day, check in and let us know how much you spent the day before and if you stayed under budget or not. We aren’t here to critique your budget (unless you ask!), but we are here to support you in staying on track!
- Also feel free to include bargain brags. Did you find a great deal or do something creative to save money, be sure to share it with all of us!
Decluttering Challenge
- It doesn’t take long for the stuff to start taking over your home. The kids rooms start overflowing with broken, neglected and just plain weird no idea where they came from toys. Your stockpile starts to spread from the kitchen, to the hall, to your bathtub. You start finding that the home for more and more items is the middle of your living room floor. Etc!
- It can be overwhelming to take on the task of decluttering your home, but the end rewards are so worth the effort. To make the process easy, I challenge you to find just 25 items every day to find a new home for. Get a box labeled donations, one labeled to sell, and one for trash. Go through 25 items a day and either put it in one of the 3 boxes or find a new permanent place for it.
- At the end of 30 days, you will have an organized home and you can have a yard sale to add more money to your fund!
- Be sure to post every day that you have gone through your 25 items and found a new home for them. Don’t just put them back where they don’t belong.
Good luck!

Budgeting: switched my cellphone service from that money hungry Sprint to Straight Talk from Wal Mart. Sprint was costing me $79/mo, the Straight talk with 3 months paid service at a time is only costing me $40/mo…woohoo $39 a month will go into my fund now.
No Dining Out: No dining out for me again today. I ate at home today and each person on my shift brought in a part of our meal that we made in our staff kitchen.
Jenny says
Minniemizing: walked 3.5 miles today. Beautiful 60 degree weather so I had to get outside!
Andrea Fuller says
Decluttering – started pricing for a children’s clothing sale happening at the end of March. Got quite a pile collected to move out!!
Lauren says
Budget: went to cvs bought face soap & body wash for $4 and received $2 in extra bucks
Minimizing: walked for 30 min today
Kristin of Couponing to Disney says
That’s great!
Jean says
Budgeting: Under budget so far this month. Today I cancelled my netflix account that I found I wasn’t using. It was costing me $17.06/month for nothing. The account will stay active until the 26th, so I get to add $17.06 to my fund that day. I also saved over half on my grocery bill today with price matching and coupons. My weekly budget is $50, cost before price matching and coupons was $46.28, after was only $22.36. Fairly new to this but I think I’ve got a good start.
Declutter: Not much to declutter, I’m starting over with very little after a divorce if I get rid of anything I’ll be sitting on the floor…lol.
No Dining out: my day off so I ate at home
Minimizingme: 30 minutes to the Biggest Loser workout video
Kristin of Couponing to Disney says
You’re doing great!
Tabitha says
Budget: So far still on budget for the month on groceries.
JenniferN says
Minniemizing: Traded in some old games and got Fitness Evolved for Kinect (after the trade in it was only $10!). I did some of the yoga, hip hop class, and jump rope. I like this game because you don’t have to hold a remote in your hand to play it!
Were the February grow your fund winners ever announced?
Kristin of Couponing to Disney says
I’ll have to check out that game!
The winners were posted here http://www.couponingtodisney.com/2012/03/02/recent-giveaway-winners-3/
JenniferN says
Thanks!
You should look into Fitness Evolved. There are SO many activities. It’s going to take awhile to unlock all of them. I’m a fan of Wii Fit but this has 10x the amount of stuff that game has and no remote or balance board to use.
Kristin of Couponing to Disney says
I’ll look for that one!

Good job! :)
Rebecca says
NDO – still managed to keep on track with cooking meals and bringing in leftovers for lunch
Declutter – cleaned out the top shelves of the closet last night – added a few more things to the charity pile. Plus went through all the papers we buy for coupons and recycled 2 bags full.
Budget is stretched tight but still on track – haven’t gone to the stores in two weeks and trying to hold out until the next paycheck.
Kristine says
Still no dining out! The kids wanted pizza, so I made my special homemade pizza, and they loved it!
Packed up a bag of clothes for charity, and still have more to go!
I found $56.35 this weekend, so that is getting put into our fund, plus I saved $40 so far on groceries!
Gym tonight for my usual routine, and a healthy chicken, cauliflower, salad for dinner!
Rebecca says
Decluttering – cleaned out my nightstand last night and added to my charity box. tonight I’m tackling the closet! I did find the hardest but best way to do a major declutter is to remove everything from where you are decluttering – for example take all of your clothes out of the closet, put back the ones that fit, you love and wear and once the closet is full – the rest automatically go in the charity bag – hard yes but since I did that 2 years ago decluttering my closet takes minutes.
NDO – brought our lunches again for hubby and me so we don’t buy lunch
Tabitha says
No Dining out: Ate out on a coupon yesterday.
Rebecca says
Minnimizing – just downloaded a series of free apps to my Kindle that will give me different 5 minute workouts to add to my day – luckily I can sneak them in at work
Budget – keeping the budget on track – though still no extra room to start my disney fund
Declutter – threw away 2 bags of old papers and added another bag of toys to the give away pile – felt good to finally finish the closet in my sons room – now on to mine!
Carrie Lawrence Grooms says
Decluttering – spent Saturday going through baby clothes to give away – hard to pass some of them on but I have a lot of space for her new clothes that WILL fit.
No Dining Out – none scheduled for the week – I eliminated Pizza night after last month using up free pizza coupons (pizza out) great for the budget since I stocked up on some deals last month.
Minniemizing – I have walked all 5 days of this month so far (today was way too snowy and cold) but I was motivated to wake myself up this morning.
Budget challenge – Been playing the Tops grocery store game and was able to “win” coupons for free bread, $1 off pasta, and .01 jax snacks – so there’s $3 in the fund for the month – it all adds up.
Jenny says
DeCluttering: Just cleaned out my jewelry box – things were in there I haven’t worn in years. Planning to sell them at the local flea market once the weather gets nicer. I also went through all of our takeout menus and threw doubles away. It was getting out of control!

I say for relieving stress besides working out is learn a new hobby such as knitting . At our local library they have free classes. New people to hang out with and make new friends. Maybe there is a class at church such as quilting. Working at a new hobby also keeps your hands and your mind on something besides food.
Clare C. says
No dining out: Used our free papa johns pizza and soda code last night, unfortunately that’s nowhere near enough pizza to feed the 6 of us so spent $22 on 2 additional large pizzas. Papa John’s is a rare treat for us and that is much less than usually spent to eat there so I guess that’s something.
Budget: Stayed in budget for the week. Have a dollar and change left over…big fund deposit this week. ;)
Minniemize: Walked the dog yesterday with my oldest daughter. Was hoping to do a big family walk today with everyone to prep for our Disney trip in 2 weeks but the rain is going to keep us indoors. Thankfully, our weather has not been too severe. I know much of the country has been hit hard…
Coleen says
No Dining Out- Darn it! Did well until when I bought McDonald’s for me and DD14 because we were rushing between activities. Haven’t had McD in months and haven’t wasted any money on take out recently. Until now!
Budget- Used my $200 of birthday money to buy disney gift cards to use in the world this summer for quick service meals once a day. Other meals will be in our DVC room.
Minniemizing- Worked out my usual 45 minutes this morning. Getting bored of recumbent bike. Can’t wait for weather to change so I can ride my real bike again.
Decluttering- Nothing yet today, but plan to do a sweep of the closet for unused clothing later.
Kristin says
No dining out: Haven’t eaten out yet in March. We leave for the beach March 10, and are trying to save all our money for our trip.
Budget: Found a rebate on yesterday for pizzas I’d already bought, so free money!
Decluttering: Today my goal is to declutter my closet.

Minniemizing: My husband has been sick so we haven’t been working out like we planned

Minniemizing-decided to start back on Weight watchers…agian, after a year off I really need to get ready for our trip
Decluttering-didn’t really do much today
Budget-THursday went to meat stock up sale at local grocery store. Got some pretty good deals, boneless chicken breast for 99 cents a pound, whole pork loins for $1.49/lb, pork steaks for $1.49/lb and pollock for $1.69 /lb, a bag of chicken wings for $3.00 (I think there was 3lbs) and a gallon of milk for $1.99(not meat I know but they do weekly coupons and this was one of it) spent $70 but stocked up with everything but ground beef (I didn’t think the price was that great to have to get 10 pounds of it) so we are set for a while. I also went to our other local store and stocked up on pepsi for $3.88 a case adn water for $2.88 a case. Last night my mom and I went to the mall area and went to babies R us to get a shower gift (man has things changed in the 5 years since I was shopping for my youngest) and hit up the dollar store where I found some nice stuff for my sons special ed teacher (always looking for stuff for her since she is always doing things for my son) also found a book about staycations that sounded cool and for a buck why not. Oh, a tip for destressing: Working out gives me endorphins that help enormously with my stress (and we’ve had a lot the past few years — lost our business, lost our house, my husband has been without full-time employment for 19 months, and I got pregnant in the beginning of all that). Anyway, the other thing that helps me is I start reading in Psalms, and when I come across an attribute of God, I write it down as a praise, then I keep reading until I have 5 praises written down. Then I write down 5 confessions, then 5 things I’m thankful for, then 5 prayer requests for other people, then 5 prayer requests for myself. And I do that daily, starting in Psalms where I left off. That has helped put things in perspective so much, and gets it out of my head and on paper, which helps me as well. I am so thankful to my friend who recommended it years ago!
Lani says
NDO: Bought a coffee at QT because of an early morning appt., $1.17
Decluttering: Nothing yesterday.
Minniemizing: Legs and back P90X DVD (first 30 min. only — did I mention P90X is extremely tough for me). Plus I went with a friend as her guest to the gym and did the Eliptical on “hill” for 43 min!
Budget: $1.17 spent — ugh!
Tammy S says
No Dining Out: Had planned a family night out but spent less than normal as we got half price appetizers as our meals and still had leftovers.
Decluttering: dropped a large box of kids clothes that they have grown out of at the neighbors home.
Minniemizing: took the day off.
Renee says
no dining out…ate out after daughter’s school program Thursday.
budget…of course we’re under budget for the month so far…last month we managed to have close to $900 left at the end of the month. $500 goes to savings, the rest to Disney. Picking up as many extra hours at work as possible to add to the fund. Going to Disneyland in May and hope to have $2000 to take with us. Staying with my sister, so lodging is free.
minnimising…not happening yet. Got to get motivated.
decluttering…trying to brighten things up around here, so will be getting rid of a few things and replacing them with cheerier stuff.

minniemizing – put the dog on a diet!
no dining out – went to a fundraiser at the school last night.
Kristin – one of the best stress reducers is yoga, it helps you become mindful, plus the breathing is a great stress reducer. You also get a great workout.

Budget: Its a new month and I am on track!
Declutter: I organized my desk and bills so I am keeping on top of the budget.

Brianna says
No dining out: had a very successful week of not eating out for lunches at all this week!
Budget: worked extra hard at seeking out the rebates this week so the money can go straight to the Disney fund.
Decluttering: working on this all day Saturday. Have company coming this week so need to get the house in order.
L says
i love rebates, did you find any good ones?
Lois says
Kristin, a great stress relief is working out. It naturally releases endorphins, which are the feel good hormones. I miss the days when I am not out running or swimming. Make an appointment on your calendar for 30 minutes for you to exercise, whether it be walking, running or kicking a ball around. Make sure to show up for your appointment, treat it like a business meeting, not like something optional. Sometimes being silly for a few minutes with the kids will take your mind of stressful stuff too, then you will forget about eating. Throw some old music on and pretend you are trying out for American Idol. If you laugh, that releases endorphins too. Watch old I Love Lucy reruns, she’s so silly you have to laugh (I get double the endorphins, because I watch it while riding the exercise bike).
Minniemize: My eating is on track, I gave up cookies and candy for Lent. I love sugar, but I had to go cold turkey. The exercise hasn’t been so good this week, because I hurt my calf on my long run last weekend, but I did get into the pool and do aqua jogging for 50 minutes on Thursday. Exercise bike today, so I can continue to not put any impact on my leg.
DeClutter: Went through 3 bags and a box of hand me downs. Got rid of two bags, and the little one has some cute jammies now. I’m still trying to decide whether to go through the hassle of selling it, or if I should just donate it.
Budget: I had $15 left over of grocery money. We had to re-do our budget with the proposed rising gas prices. We are getting more now to ease the crunch during the summer. We are holding on to the extra (kind of a bank) so it’s not so bad later. I hope this works.
No Dining Out: Hubby made pizza for us after the girls got back from dance class. We also had salads. No Dining Out for us all week. :-)
Larissa says
Decluttering: still working thru my girls closets today getting ready for a kids consignment sale.
Katie says
Budget – I went couponing at Walgreen’s and Kroger and I did pretty good! They had some good sales on meat and I used a coupon for milk and cereal (which I am in need of!) to get the milk pretty cheap too.
Minniemize – I have been using Weight Watchers but yesterday was pretty stressful with all the tornadoes coming around. I live in Northern Kentucky and the school were under tornado lock, which means they were all in the basement. Thankfully, nothing was destroyed at our home.
No Dining Out- None!! So happy!!
Declutter – sold some things on Ebay so we are packing them up for shipping
Kristin of Couponing to Disney says
I’m glad you’re all ok!
Katie says
Budget challenge: successfully budgeted for all of 2012 so far! It really is amazing to see where your dollars go – and to give you motivation to have left over dollars at the end of the month. In February we were able to send an additional $900 towards our mortgage principle!
Going well in March so far as well.
Kristin of Couponing to Disney says
That’s great! Good job. :)
Tammie Whitaker says
Kristen- I eat when I am stressed too. My girls have been sick and I found some M&M’s to eat. Although I have been leaving cut up pineapple out to eat, Yoga really relieves stress and keeps you calmer through out the day, cleaning helps me relieve stress, leaving the house and going anywhere with my girls. Meeting up with other moms, It is a hard habit to break not eating when stressed and I am constantly working at it.
Tammie Whitaker says
no dining out- went to mcd’s last night my one daughter is finally getting over stomach bug and wanted french fries, and cheeseburger.
rest of the family ate at home except other daughter who can’t really eat yet with the stomach bug
minniemize-did yoga on the 1st nothing yesterday
declutter-nothing yet this month
budget-went to the grocery store on Thursday and save $23 in coupons spent $61
Kristin of Couponing to Disney says
Glad your daughter is feeling better! :)
Kristine says
My declutter starts today, I usually do it right around the time I get my tax return, using that as a reminder that my donations helped us get back a big chunk of money each year.
As far as the exercise/stress: once you start moving more, the less stressful you will feel. I started going to the gym faithfully, 2 times a week (that’s all I can do right now with the kids activities) and walking up and down the steps at home (especially with clothes baskets) my suggestion is, if you find yourself going to the kitchen when you are stressed, take a walk up and down the steps 10 times, or go right out the door, and take a walk down the street. By the time you are finished you might get an additional 20 mins in, and you will also have relieved whatever stress you might have been feeling! :)
Angela says
No Dining Out – We didn’t eat out on the 1st. On the 2nd, we had a planned dinner out. Used a gift card and saved half the cost.
Minniemizing – Nothing yet, but I’m thinking about exercising. Does that count?
Budget – Still under budget for the week. Loved the idea of breaking dollars to save the change. Even hubby jumped on board with it. Gathered up our spare change that had been piling up for awhile and took it to the bank. Deposited our quarters and dimes (it was all that I could carry) and had a grand total of $268. Wow!! Can’t wait to take the rest of the change.

Decluttering: Took a large donation box of food over to a needy neighbor’s house today so I cleared out some of the extras freebys I’ve been getting lately.

Minniemizingt: My feet have ached really bad today from my long walk yesterday without the proper inserts in my shoes. Ugh. So no major workouts today, but I did make sure I have good inserts in the shoes now and I watched what I ate today. :-)

Minniemize Me: I was able to get a few laps in at the track before the rain started this morning!
Re: your note about relieving stress other ways than by eating… I actually find walking to help me with stress relief. Whether it’s at the track or on the treadmill, I just put my earphones in and tune out the rest of the world. I really enjoy the 20 to 30 minutes where I can just walk and not have to think about anything.
