Seeing a sea turtle is an amazing part of nature. Disney loves them too! Not only in their movies, Disney is doing important work to help save the Sea Turtles. Sadly, most sea turtles are now classified as an endangered or a threatened species. Learn how Disney is helping to save the sea turtles!
A Cast Member involved Sea Turtle Field Conservation program began in 2003 to protect, monitor and mark nests of sea turtles. Disney takes its role on turtle conservation seriously. Many turtles come to nest near Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. In fact, it is one of the most active nesting places for Sea Turtles in all of Florida.
Since the start of the Disney Conservation Team Wildlife they have documented almost 17,000 nests from 3 different sea turtle species. Another incredible fact? More than 1 million baby sea turtles have hatched on or near Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, which stretches 5 miles.
They work each year to minimize disturbances of nests and, eliminate fisheries gear and reduce plastic pollution. Another fun fact, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort features sea turtle-friendly lighting. This helps nesting females and hatchlings find their way on the journey back to the sea.
At home you can help out too, by disposing of your own trash properly.
The Disney Conservation Fund has played a big role as well in the protection of sea turtles worldwide. Nearly $4 million dollars has been provided to 24 different countries. This money has assisted in the protection of 6 different species of sea turtles. One of these accomplishments includes the Tree Fountain’s sea turtle conservation program in India.
The longest running sea turtle research program worldwide was also funded with the help of the Disney Conservation Fund. Named, the Sea Turtle Conservancy’s Tortuguero program. The Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research, located at the University of Florida, is another accomplishment. One of their goals is to stop the decline of sea Turtles in Florida.
