Call your local community college/trade school/dental school and see if they offer discount/free services. I have heard of them offering free or discounted hair cuts, teeth cleanings, manicures, oil changes, car maintenance, ultrasounds (must have your doctor’s permission), etc. If you know of any more leave a comment!

I just got my teeth cleaned at our dental hygiene clinic on campus this week! It was $15 (since I am a student, $20 regular I believe) and I got them cleaned, three teeth sealed, I would have had x-rays but did not need them, and I got a flouride treatment! Great value, and it really helps them!

I found out the sex of my first baby at a tech school for ultrasounds. My insurance wouldn’t pay for an ultrasound without being high risk, They did a great job and I found out he was a Boy! ;0)

If you have a massage therapy school nearby, they’re always looking for guinea pigs for the students to work on. At the school here in Mobile, they have to do a certain number of free massages before they can get their license. Always worth a look for a free/cheap massage!

Pensacola State College formerly Pensacola Junior College in Pensacola, FL has a sonography program and they do free 2D ultrasounds for women that are pregnant. You have to be a certain number of weeks along before they do it, but it’s totally free :) I was going to do one with MJ until he decided to make an early appearance. It helps the students learn to ultraounds and measure the babies :)

This might be obvious, but don’t forget about your local library for books. Some libraries have video/dvd sections. And, some libraries are even getting e-books available for those with e-readers. Also, a lot of libraries have special programs for kids…

Another vote for the library here!
We cut back on our Netflix due to the library. They don’t have quite the selection we’d like (foreign films, etc.), and sometimes the discs are scratched and unwatchable (so get several selections for movie night, so you won’t be left without something to watch!), but you can’t beat free (or should I say already paid for (with taxes))?
Also, if you live in a large city with a multi-library system, see if you can search their catalog and request items from other libraries online. This will give you access to a much larger selection with minimal effort. We live in Houston and have access to *many* libraries through the online system. Whenever we want something, we just search for it, hit the “Request” button, and then pick it up from our local library (usually within 2-3 days, unless it’s a hot/popular item).

This is not a school but…recently I found out that Supercuts has a class about once a month for new hires. It lasts for 2-3 days and the wash and haircut are free. (I did tip!) The stylists may be just out of school or they may have worked elsewhere before being hired by Supercuts. I found this under “Free” on Craigslist. On the way over I thought it might be a hoax, but it was legit. You may want to call ahead to make sure you get a slot. The woman in charge put me on her email list and I get notified of the classes. I assume all Supercuts do this.
