Here’s another great Pinterest find. Don’t pay for expensive diaper rash creams. Mix equal parts petroleum jelly (Vaseline – but there are cheaper generic alternatives that are the same thing) and corn starch. Doctor approved and works as good (or better!) than store bought creams. And it can be mixed up as needed, preventing waste!

This treatment is going to sound totally weird. When my grandmother tools me about it I thought she was nuts.
One of my boys had an allergy to something that was causing him to have 10 HORIBLE diapers a day. They were so bad that his little legs and bottom were bleading. After hospital stays and tons of ointment, I finally tried Grandmas treatment as a last resort. All you do is lightly brown flour in an iron skillet and sprinkle it on their bottom. It only took one day too clear it up! When I told the Dr. about it, she said that they used it in the NICU. We used it on all 4 boys after that.
Best diaper rash remedy I was ever told. Bag Balm. It is about $4 for a tin that last a long time. It is made from lanolin, so make sure there are no wool allergies, but it allows the skin to breath whereas zinc doesn’t. Was Nurse practitioner recommended, and approved by our doctor.
My daughter has terrible eczema and we always use cloth diapers because of this reason. We were out of town for a week and didn’t want to hassle with having to bring and clean diapers, so we used disposables. Her poor bottom was so raw after a week in disposables that we ended up at the dermatologist. The prescription she gave to us was $200 WITH insurance. I had to go online to look at the ingredients because she has multiple allergies too. To my surprise the medication was 90% zinc, 10% petroleum jelly, and although the math does not work out 1% anti-fungal cream.
When the pharmacist told us it would be $200 for the prescription I asked if I could make it myself. She stated that if she were me she would do the same. I was able to purchase zinc behind the pharmacy counter at Target without a prescription. You could also use the extra strength Desitin cream (contains about 40% zinc content). Mix with 9 parts zinc: 1 part petroleum jelly. You do not even need the anti-fungal cream. The stuff works miracles! I make a batch and store in a container to use as needed.
Wow! It’s crazy it could be that expensive with insurance. I’d be scared to see the price without insurance! :(
