This tip comes from my reader Beth…
Did you know that you can make your own microwave popcorn without all of the artificial colors and flavors? All you need is popcorn kernels, oil, a paper lunch bag, and a microwave! Put 1/4 cup popcorn kernels in a paper lunch bag, 1/2 teaspoon of olive or canola oil. Seal the bag by either folding 2 or 3 times, scotch tape and microwave for around 2 minutes and voila! microwave popcorn! Microwaves do vary, so listen for the popping to slow. Your microwave might need more or less time. For kettle corn you can add a spoonful of white granulated sugar and a couple of shakes of salt.
Not only does it save money, (2 or 3 dollars for 30 to 50 bags of popcorn depending on the size of the bag), but also eliminates all of the artificial flavorings and colorings that are in most microwave popcorns!

Oh…I am printing this one out! We are transitioning to more clean eating around here and we have missed the micro popcorn terribly! We have an air popper, but my girls hate to use it. I have missed the convenience of micro popcorn that they can do themselves. This is the answer to both! Great tip!
Thank you for this!! My little boy loves loves loves popcorn and I always cringe b/c of the chemicals and smells that come from the microwave popcorn. I had just about decided to buy one of the air poppers to replace our microwave pcorn. I didn’t know about the bowl at Amazon but that sounds good too. I will definitly try this!
I got an air popper as a wedding gift, I just put the kernels in, plug it in, and watch it pop! My toddler loves to watch it work. No oil, I just add a little spray butter when it’s done. Low calorie and full of fiber! yum!
We’ve been doing this ever since we saw Alton Brown (Food Network) do it. He even uses one staple and swears it’s fine (I don’t). I love to make it with olive oil; I’ve also used ‘I can’t believe it’s not Butter’ or vegetable oil. I have found Orvile’s popcorn really does pop up better and is worth the money. The cheaper brand of kernels leaves a lot of unpopped kernels in the bottom (but still saving you money over the prepared microwave packs). In fact my husband (I mean Santa) put popcorn seasoning salt in my stocking. This is absolutely a good deal and much healthier too!
Here is another way -you can get a microwave popcorn bowl on Amazon for about $8. Just put plain kernels in, with oil or without, and cook the same way as a bag.
okay I gotta try this
If you’re watching calories, you can actually do this WITHOUT the oil and make air-popped popcorn the same way!
Good idea!
