This tip comes from my reader Becca…
Last year I bought a Knock Out Rose Bush at the end of the planting season on sale at Lowe’s. It was the last one left and I took it to the front and asked if it was actually going to live. The man stated that it was a sturdy plant but just in case he would give it to me for a dollar! It was originally a $45 plant. This year I wanted some more but did not want to pay the high price again. I simply asked if I picked out some of the “uglier” plants less likely to sell if I could get a discount. Without hesitation, they offered me half off. I picked the non flowering plants that needed a couple snips and they are now in the ground flowering beautifully!

also look at big lots. My mom got 10 knockout rose bushes a while back for $3.99 a piece and 4 of them ended up being the cross breeds or whatever they are called that have 2 colors!!
This is what we have found for a few flowers. If you plant them with seeds (so it’s roughly $1-3 for a packet) you actually get a better foundation for the flowers. It might take them awhile to get big but once they are they totally beat out the flowers you find in the store.
One local store even gave away plants this year, as the stock was not selling. I did not take any due to limited gardening space, but it looked like a good deal to me!
I went to lowe’s a few weeks ago and bought some rather sad looking annuals. They had new buds coming in, but no one at the store bothered to pick off the dead blloms. I knew with a little water the plant would be fine. I bought it for $1.50 and now my garden looks like a million bucks! (My husband even commented on how lovely the plant came back to life!)
Wow! I’ve never thought to do that, thanks for the tip! Now if only I can keep them alive after I get them home :)
I got a couple of rose bushes from Menards a couple years ago that were on sale for 99 cents. They are the most beautiful roses and keep coming back year after year!
agree on this. if you are at Lowe’s garden center, always go to the back of the area they have outside. I found rolling racks there with several plants at half off that just needed to be dead-headed. a whole flat of pansies was $2.99! and, it never hurts to ask if you don’t see the scraggly looking stuff out.
