Growing your own herbs, veggies and more is a great way to save money. Double up on the savings by reusing containers to get your garden started!
Reader Kari gave us this idea:
Save cans with cool looking labels and start herbs in them in your kitchen window. Also cardboard milk cartons work really great for seeds because you can transplant them straight into the ground when it’s warm enough.
How do you make your garden frugal?

I use empty cardboard egg cartons as seed starting pots. The cardboard holds moisture in the soil and the roots of the seedlings can easily grow through the pot which means no transplanting. When you’re ready, just plop the whole thing into the ground and it grows great! This year I have carrots, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, zucchini, yellow squash and sugar pie pumpkins all growing from seed. The lettuce, cabbage & spinach is in the ground now (it likes the cold, wet spring we get here in the northwest) and the rest will be ready to plant in about 4 weeks. Yay summer!!!
That’s a good idea!
