I found this tip fascinating because I had no idea! Reader Rachel shares how she orders take-out as a special treat for her family and still saves a bundle!
Every other Saturday night I order Chinese or Thai take out for dinner. but we order it at lunch time, just before they switch over to dinner pricing. They give you the same amount of food but it costs about 40% less

Also look for special deals – our local Chinese restaurant is relatively cheap and offers tons of freebies when you spend a certain amount. For one, plain rice comes with all of their entrees – more than enough for us. They also add one free soda for every ten dollars. And when you spend 20 dollars, they throw in free crab rangoons or chinese fried chicken. So if you make a 20 dollar order, you’re getting that free side and two free sodas – which is not bad at all.
Thought I’d heard it all! This is a new one on me and I’m going to try it!
We don’t have a lot of options where we live, but we can pick up take out at Western Sizzlin for half or less of the cost of eating in. They give you takeout boxes and let you go through the buffet and select what you want. They charge by the pound for take out, and since we are not huge eaters, it works for us. We always have plenty for 2 adults and 2 teenage boys at half the cost.
OMG, we do this everytime we have Chinese take out! Our restaurant has free delivery as well, so I order it while at work and it’s delivered right to me! No extra gas or time going to get it!
We have always tried to dine out on the lunch menu- arriving late in the time frame.
Ex: Local Chinese Buffet- Lunch $6 / per person VS Dinner $10 / per person.
The difference between lunch and dinner? A few items are removed to add roast beef, crab legs and 1 or 2 other items I can’t recall just now.
Always order water!
We cook extra rice at home before going to pick up Chineese food to go, youd be suprised how far you can stretch 1 order with the extra rice youve cooked at home.
