I got this tip from reader, Susan, who discovered that at $45/month per dog, her pet grooming expenses were totalling over $1000 a year! She figured out how to do it herself for less. Here’s what she said:
We have two smaller dogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. It costs about $45/dog per month for grooming, that’s almost $1,080 a year for both dogs! My daughter, age 20, and I decided we would do it ourselves and save the money. We read some online dog grooming tips, spent about $10 on supplies that last about 6 months. The dogs are happy, clean and smell great! It takes us about 15 minutes per dog once a month – less time than it took to drive back and forth to the groomers and we save the gas money too! That’s a 98% savings just on grooming!
We purchased a large bottle of pet shampoo, and another of conditioner, which we found on a clearance rack at our local Marshall’s for $4.50 each, and then we went to the local dollarstore and picked up the nail clippers for $1.00! Even if we don’t do as great a job as a professional groomer would, we are still saving a huge amount of money, and I believe we get better at it every month! Plus, even if we decided to let the professionals do it once every 6 months, we are still saving a ton of money!
Thanks Susan! Don’t forget, I’m always looking for great money saving tips, so be sure to share yours!

Check your local vocational school. When we took our shelties there for grooming the cost was only $10 each!
I totally agree. I also wash my dog at home. And when I don’t feel like cleaning up the huge mess (he’s a big dog), I head out to do-it-yourself dog wash. More expensive than at home, but still a fraction of the cost of professional grooming.
thanks for the tips! i was actually wanting to do my dog’s grooming by myself also. If anyone has tips on nail clipping and defurminating or good how to groom your dog websites that teach you, that’d be great!
I’ll be looking out for some! :)
Thanks for the tips!!!! I wash my dog my self too….soooo much cheaper!
