Have you ever stopped at those produce stands you see on the side of the road? You might be surprised what you find! A lot of times the prices can be very reasonable and less than the grocery store! At my favorite stand I can get bananas for $.50/lb (vs. $.69 at the store) and I can get a couple large tomatoes or onions for just $1.00.
Do you shop at your local produce stands? Are the prices higher or lower than the store?

Such a great tip!!! We do this all the time!!
Whether the prices are cheaper or not I always try to hit farmstands and farmer’s markets. We also have a share in an organic CSA. Small farm grown food tastes much different, IMO, than the mass produced, trucked in foods that the big grocery stores have. It is delicious and I feel it is healthier for my family.
we are very lucky to have a farm market right across the road from our neighborhood. In the summer sometimes they give away the day old corn, or sell it REALLY cheap. Their prices aren’t always better than the stores, but the quality is MUCH better, and they employ local teenagers. My dd had her first job there and she really knows her fruits and veggies now. They also have fresh eggs and other yummy things. We also have a weekend farmers market near us in the spring/summer. There is a group that does market research there and they pay in farmers market bucks,so we do the research and then can buy more produce.
The few farms stands we have in my area are much more expensive than the grocery store. Granted that the quality is very different, but it is hard to swallow the cost when you know that the same item is half the price elsewhere.
We like to stop and get the peacans in Texas. Yummy!
We live in California and there are roadside produce stands and stores all over the place. We have one here by us that is really cheap on most things. You can get a bag of carrots for 50 cents. Tomatoes are cheap. Onions are cheap. For the most part everything is way cheaper and it’s locally grown.
not necessary roadside stand – but when we visit the Penn State PA area to visit family we LOVE the Amish farm stands – you can get a whole bushel of apples (we’re talking a good 100 or so) for something like $15 !! they always have whatever is in season – and the best and cheapest pumpkins and mums around
