Reader Lorie had this food stretching tip to share:
Add beans to your dishes. This is an inexpensive and nutritious way to stretch recipes. It’s a depression error trick! Plus, it helps to prevent over eating by making you feel full and you stay full longer, reducing the need to snack. Try Lentils in Italian dishes, black beans added to hamburgers, or small white beans added to salsa!
Don’t forget, I’m always looking for your best money saving tip, so please share!

i am in La. so,i just cook red beans, or great white northern, or blackeye beans with 1/2 lb.turkey susage or 3/4 lb. lower fat bacon and serve with rice and cornbread.
i only cook 1/2 bag of beans for husband & i. it cost $.75 for beans,$1.25for susage or bacon,
$.85 for rice,cornbread is $.70,1 onion $.20 and 1/2 lg. bell pepper $.30
serve with fresh tomatoes about $5 for 2 & we have leftovers for 1 person the next day.i will have to try to add beans to other foods.
God bless!
I use not only beans , but corn, and sometimes hashbrowns. They add nice texture and flavor to dishes like tacos, enchilidas, and meat loafs.
Another thing to do is add rice to recipes (or barley)…anything that expands and is cheap will really stretch things!
We add beans to lots of things. They are good for you and have lots of fiber in them.
I think you mean “era” not “error”.
I do add beans to many recipes. If you have a whole grain and a bean, that makes a complete protein (or so I have read.)
