Out with the old, in with the… well nothing really… With no real announcement or information, Disney discontinued their Mobile Magic App for smart phones. This app was used in both Disney World and Disneyland. Sadly, there is no Disney replacement for Disneyland, unless you visit Disney’s mobile website, which of course no one will do. Disney ended this app on the 23rd of December, which seems so odd to me. The busiest week at any Disney Park is the week between Christmas Day and New Years Day. Why couldn’t they have let it expire January 2nd at least?
You may recall the smart phone app Mobile Magic was released in 2009 with a $9.99 cost in partnership with Verizon Wireless. By 2011 the app became free and in early 2012 iPhone users could get their own version. You can no longer download the app and their will be no more updates. If you have it on your phone, might I suggest a deletion and save yourself some of the space for an app that does work?
You may be wondering why this is newsworthy to me? I’m a Disneyland kid at heart. I love Walt Disney World as much as anyone, but Disneyland will always be special to me and I hate when it gets neglected like an ugly step-child. That’s exactly what Disney has done. They’ve put billions of dollars (literally) into My Disney Experience for Walt Disney World and yet have completely ignored Disneyland’s needs. Why was there no replacement app available? Or better yet, why can’t Disneyland also be on the My Disney Experience program?
I have said to my guests, friends and anyone who will listen that as a Travel Agent, I can not begin to even understand how Disneyland and Walt Disney World are owned and operated by the same corporation. It’s literally two completely separate entities with their own ways of doing things, including dining reservations, packages, vacations, transportation and more.
This all begs the question, what do you do when visiting Disneyland and you need to know ride times, or other important information such as what time is the 3:00pm parade at? Well you can go with some of the unofficial smart phone apps such as TouringPlans. Like I said earlier, Disney suggests you log into disneyland.com on your web browser, or a number of other suggestions they have. None of which are even remotely worth mentioning.
For now, I suggest we all get to go Old School and ask a Cast Member…

We had the app loaded on our phone when we went in September but never used it.

I have a “My Disney Experience” app that is working. It gives you wait times, you can find out park hours, characters today, make dining reservations, etc. from it. Check it out!!!

Melanie, You have one for Disneyland? My Disney Experience app that I have is only good for Walt Disney World. If you know of one for Disneyland, I’d love to know about it. Thanks!
