Are you planning on visiting Walt Disney World in January? Here’s everything you need to know:
Crowds
The first week of the month leading up to the marathon weekend sees heavy crowds. You can expect a dip in crowds until Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend where there will be another high peak. Once you are through the 3 day weekend, crowds will remain low through the rest of the month except on the weekends when the locals come to the parks.
The best time in January to visit Walt Disney World is to arrive on the second Sunday of the month and leave the following Sunday or arrive on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and stay for a week.
Due to the low crowds, Fastpass+ reservations for popular attractions will be easier to come by. ADRs will also be available closer to the time you visit instead of being booked months in advance. It is a great time of the year to make a last minute trip.
Weather
January can get chilly in Florida. I recommend that you pack a light jacket, socks and shoes (no sandals), and bring a light blanket to drape over your legs as you wait for parades and shows.
Parks
Expect Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids to be closed for refurbishment. One of the waterparks will also be closed for their yearly maintenance. Other attractions will be closed during this month depending on if they are in need of repair.
The Magic Kingdom will close as early as 8 pm on some nights. Hollywood Studios will close at 7 pm most nights and Animal Kingdom will close as early as 9 pm.
Events
The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend takes place on the second weekend of the month. This event includes the Walt Disney World Marathon, Goofy’s Challenge, Half Marathon and runDisney events for kids.
Festival of the Arts – is a celebration of food, art and entertainment perfectly blended together. Guests can look forward to art displays, specialty foods and special photo opportunities. It debuted in 2017 and typically runs mid-January through mid-February.
January is one of my favorite months to visit Walt Disney World. You won’t be disappointed if you choose to go in this month.
