D23 Expo 2019 brought us many exciting details, including from Disney Cruise Line. A fifth ship was named, Disney Wish and a second island destination was named in The Bahamas. Learn 16 incredible facts about Disney Cruise Line’s New ship & island!
Disney Wish
- The atrium on Disney Wish will be 3-stories tall, inspired by an enchanted fairytale (concept art above)
- Disney Wish will feature Rapunzel on the ship’s stern (it is a tradition to adorn back of ship with an iconic character). Also on the stern of Disney Wish, is Rapunzel’s sidekick
- Disney Wish is scheduled to set sail starting January 2022.
- Disney has 2 other ships joining its fleet in upcoming years.
- All 3 new Cruise ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas
- Ship will weigh in at approximately 144,000 gross tons
- Disney Wish will have 1,250 guest staterooms (a bit larger than Disney Dream & Disney Fantasy)
New Disney Island
- A second tropical destination is being added to The Bahamas for Disney Cruise guests.
- The new destination is named Lighthouse Point and is located on the island of Eleuthera.
- Disney will be involved in conservation efforts to preserve and protect the environment. In fact, construction will begin only after the Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan is accepted by the Government of The Bahamas. Public consultation will also need to occur first.
- Disney will also be working with local artist for Bahamian culture, mixed with Disney magic.
- Construction could being as early as 2020, with completion as late as 2022 or 2023.
- The purchase of the privately-owned Lighthouse Point was completed early 2019 by Disney Cruise Line (DCL).
- DCL will not develop more than 20 percent of the property.
- Sustainable building practices will be used, including an open-trestle pier (eliminating need to dredge a ship channel)
- DCL has also committed to donating 190 acres of land to The Bahamian Government and more.
