Disney World, located in Florida, has their hurricane season roughly June through November each year. A hurricane is not to be taken lightly, be ready and stay safe. Below are 45 tips to prepare your household and home for a hurricane. - Charge your devices
- Put gas in your car & fill extra gas cans
- Have cash on hand (in case of power outages)
- Fill your bath tub with water (before storm in case water gets tainted)
- Put together a kit for your child (things to do, favorite toy etc.)
- Take pictures/scan important documents
- Pack all medications, refill prescriptions
- Talk to children to prepare/calm them
- Take photos/videos of home before you evacuate (in case need to contact insurance for repairs)
- Buy bottled water or jugs of water, have enough for everyone in your household to last at least 3 days
- Use plywood to cover windows/doors
- Have flashlights and extra batteries on hand
- Stock up on canned food, snacks and other food that do not have to be cooked/refrigerated
- Empty your dishwasher and store important items, as it seals watertight
- Pack things to do to ride out storm that do not require power: coloring, cards, games etc.
- Run Ice makers and store ice as much as you can
- Freeze water in Tupperware bowls for pets
- Use up any items in fridge/freezer before storm in case of lost power
- Check tires on all vehicles
- Have an evacuation plan in place if need be
- Use totes to store important documents, duct tape shut and keep on higher levels/areas of home
- Place towels/blankets at window sills/door jams to soak up excess water
- Avoid floodwater, it could be contaminated and is dangerous to try to walk in
- Stay Indoors
- Have a battery operated radio on hand
- Pack a first aid kit
- Have small multi-purpose tool on hand
- Know your towns hurricane plan
- Unplug appliances, shut off propane
- Take anything in that can be blown by wind (outside toys, chairs etc.)
- Turn up fridge & freezer to coldest setting to preserve food longer
- Avoid candles
- Check on elderly neighbors before storm
- Pack hygiene items (for evacuation)
- Know if your home is in a flood zone, check elevation
- Trim trees, cut loose branches around home
- Consider a generator
- Have a whistle on hand (to call for help in worst case scenario)
- Have a can opener
- Keep a wrench handy to shut off utilities
- Know your area or get a map
- Stock up on baby supplies for little ones
- Dust masks (if air is contaminated)
- Designate a safe space in your home (away from direction of winds)
- Carry important documents with you
