As we prepare here in the United States for closures due to the threat of COVID-19, here is what we know that has closed so far and updates where applicable:
On Friday, January 24th, 2020, Shanghai Disneyland announced that it would close effective January 25th, 2020 for precautions for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). On March 9, 2020, they began to slowly roll out a limited number of shopping, dining and recreational experiences. Disneytown (like Downtown Disney) began to open as well as the Shanghai Disneyland hotel and Wishing Star Park (a public park owned by the resort). The Shanghai theme park as not opened yet.
They plan to let in a limited number of guests with reduced operation hours. Guests will be required to undergo temperature screening procedures upon their arrival, will need to present their Heath QR Code when entering the dining venues and will be required to wear a mask during their entire visit. They are also being asked to maintain respectful social distances from one another and employees.
With China being the epicenter of the outbreak, I would imagine that precautions will be more than what Disney World and Disneyland in the United States would require of Guests when they re-open. But who knows for sure….
Hong Kong Disneyland announced it was closing on January 25th, 2020. It has yet to re-open.
Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea originally planned to reopen on March 16th, but have extended their closure through early April. They closed on February 29th.
DineylandParis was slowly closing areas of the park (such as cancelling parades and nighttime entertainment), but announced a temporary closure starting Sunday, March 15th, 2020. The Disney Hotel will remain open for now so that Guests can make necessary travel arrangements. The retail and dining complexes of Disney Village remain open.
If you hold a reservation at a Disney Hotel in Paris through June 1st, they have waived all motivation and cancellation fees until April 15th and are offering the same price if you want to postpone your stay through Oct 15th.
As the threat of the COVID-19 Coronavirus heightens in the United States and many places begin declaring State of Emergencies, we now have official word that Disneyland Resort & California Adventure will be temporarily closing. This is surely due in part to the cancelling or postponing of any non-essential gatherings larger than 250 people, a measure which is in effect across multiple states in the United States.
A quick trip to the Disneyland website greets users with a Temporary Closure Notification:
While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month.
The Hotels of Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday, March 16 to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements; Downtown Disney will remain open. We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time.
Disneyland Resort will work with guests who wish to change or cancel their visits, and will provide refunds to those who have hotel bookings during this closure period. We anticipate heavy call volume over the next several days and appreciate guests’ patience as we work hard to respond to all inquiries.
