I’m a little irritated this week. I love to garden and thankfully I have seeds to start this year, since we aren’t buying any started plants. Our Lowes is always packed, y’all. Unfortunately the weather keeps dipping into the 40s at night, which makes it hard to keep the seeds and seedlings warm, even in my tiny and not-at-all professional greenhouse. If I keep the light on all night for warmth, the soil dries out. If I turn it off…well I lost several pepper plant seedlings due to an unexpected dip into the cold.
It’s making it more difficult to harden off the small plants that are ready to go outside as well. Many are in a holding pattern because I worry about risking them when suddenly the temp drops to the low forties. If these fail, it’s not like I can just run out to the store for replacements, remember?
The good news is that at least the heat lasts forever here. I’m talking October is still t-shirt and shorts weather. I’ve sweated my way through my Harvest-time festivals than I care to think about. So at least a sluggish start now doesn’t mean no fruits and veggies this year. Thankfully the tomatoes are doing well so we’ll at least have those, and I do have a pair of jalapeno plants that are strong and healthy.
All this to say- I’m just impatient. There is a lot of joy to be found in gardening, and especially something that puts food on the table, even if that food is a metric ton of tomatoes because I got overzealous with the seedlings. It’s irritating to have to wait for the weather to stop being crazy, on top of everything else going on. Blergh.
On the savings front, I’ve decided to implement a soft drink ban in my house before 5pm. Since we’ve been staying in, Diet Dr. Pepper has become just one of my food/drink related comforts. As I was laying awake at 3am the other night, my blood feeling like it was dancing in my veins, I realized I need to cut back. It’ll be a great way to save money too, as we won’t be running through 12 packs like they are going out of style. I know if I cut them out completely, that would be a big savings on our grocery bill, but then my husband would riot. This seems like a good compromise.
Lots of variety in my small cash outs this week. This is why I say it’s so important to diversify!
