The Walt Disney World Standard Dining plan is $78.01 for an adult and it includes 2 snacks (either a drink or food), 1 quick service credit (a drink and entree) and 1 table service credit (a drink, entree and dessert). I am going to show you how to eat for for less than the dining plan in Animal Kingdom without the dining plan.
Here is what your day could look like:
Breakfast – Dine in your room on poptarts, oatmeal (get hot water from the coffee pot or food court), granola bars, etc. Anything that is easy and quick to eat.
Lunch – Order Ribs and Chicken combo for $15.49 from Flame Tree Barbeque. Add a soda for $3.99. Total: $19.48
Snack – Twist Ice Cream Cone from Anandapur Ice Cream Truck for $4.99.
Dinner – Crispy Honey Chicken ($19.99) from Yak and Yeti Table Service. Order a soda for $3.99. Enjoy New York Cheesecake for dessert ($9.99). Total: $33.97
Snack – Pongu Lumpia ($3.29) from Pongu Pongu.
Total: $61.73+ tax!
If you don’t drink soda and opt for water instead (we don’t drink soda so when we go to Disney World, we drink water everywhere) you’ll only pay $47.96 for your day!

Like you we don’t drink soda. We also don’t like dessert with our meals so when that is your snack in the middle of the day saves you even more. Tried the dining plan once we don’t eat as much as they give you. While we didn’t lose money we would have spent way less if we had gone OOP.
